Learn languages with your Kindle (or a different e-reader)
Bilingual parallel texts eBooks, optimized for Kindle and other e-readers
(With the texts of the two languages displayed on two reflowable columns)
Bilingual editions with facing-page translations, particularly useful for those who want to improve the knowledge of a foreign language by trying to read the original version with the support of a translation on the side, are almost absent from the catalog of eBooks; this is due mainly to the technological choices made for the reading devices (the eBook-readers) which have no longer the old concept of page, and remove most of the typographic formatting info to make text easier to read and to improve zoom feature.
New optimized editions for Kindle and other e-reader of some literary classics and contemporary books have been developed and published to meet this need.
Figure 1
(Kindle Fire preview – text appears in two columns, each for one language)
Parallel texts eBooks with facing translation, i.e. on two columns, each for one language (see preview), are usable both by those who own a Kindle or another supported e-book reader, as well as those who install the free Kindle Apps for Windows PC / Mac, Android smartphone and tablet (On iPad / iPhone, Kindle Cloud, old DX, and Kindle web preview ‘Look inside’), the text will be displayed by alternate paragraphs between the two languages.
Figure 2
(Kindle Fire preview – device can be rotated vertically or horizontally)
The peculiarity of these eBooks is that they are not publications with fixed layout pages, but they are regular texts arranged in two reflowable columns with adaptable width, i.e. they are able to adapt smoothly to the screen size and they allow magnification of characters and automatic repagination according to the zoom and to the possible horizontal or vertical rotation mode of the reading device.
Bilingual parallel texts eBooks published by Kentauron are an editorial innovation for the overall Kindle books catalog, and represent a new way of using e-readers devices as a useful tool to learn foreign languages.
Currently more than 60 titles have already been published in several language pairs including literary classics such as The Adventures of Pinocchio and The Wizard of Oz, social commitment books like The Subjection of Women by John Stuart Mill, poetry collections and contemporary books, and many others now being published.
